T-shirt quilts

Several months ago I was asked if I could make a t-shirt quilt for a friend who lost her husband a couple of years ago. She showed up with a laundry basket full of t-shirts. She wanted a Queen size quilt but lives in Florida so we didn't want it to be too heavy. We went through the t-shirts to prioritize the ones she really wanted in the main quilt and said I could do what I wanted with the rest and the quilt pattern was totally up to me.  Well not only did we end up with what turned out to be more like a King size quilt but 2 lap quilts and a pillow! I used every t-shirt including any logos or images that were on the sleeves or pockets.  I used the lightest batting I could find and I'm so happy with how they came out!!!   The pictures aren't the best but I did the best I could with all of the rainy days we've been having and they needed to make their way to Florida this week. So here we are, the last several months of sewing.

Butterfly Delight

Over the weekend I decided I wanted to brighten up my sewing / family room area with my butterflies.

I laid out a couple of design ideas and took photos, sent them to some friends and family to get their feedback.  Ultimately I decided to put them on point in a lattice pattern. With the design I chose I needed 3 additional butterflies.

This was my original idea but when I laid it out it wasn't feeling quite right.

This is the layout I went with. The blue butterfly fabric is left over from a blanket my Mom made for me several years ago that I still use.

Thought I would add some of my scrappy blocks but that was an immediate no.

I laid out the butterflies and moved them around until I was satisfied with the color balance and taking photos along the way as reference. I love the look of them all flying in different directions.

Once I decided where each butterfly was going to go I added the sashing pieces and side setting triangles to each row (sorry I only took 1 photo at the beginning) Added the corner triangles and assembled the rows together.

Testing out the blue butterfly fabric as a border

Then it was time to decide on borders. I went with 1.5" black then a 2.5" of the blue butterfly fabric. Ta-da the top is finished. Turned out approx. 30" x 38"

Now to quilt it and get it hung up.
